Marissa is awesome and so are her classes. You won't find another yoga instructor who is more compassionate, knowledgeable and fun. She makes the classes a joy to be in and her soothing voice relaxes you as much as the yoga she teaches. She has been my instructor for two years now. She's brilliant.

Marissa, I love the way you teach! You are the most enthusiastic, energetic and fun teacher I've ever met. You are knowledgeable and a serious task master offering a seemingly never-ending array of poses and flows that push even the most athletic to their limits. Regardless of ability, everyone in your class is challenged, sweaty and smiling. Learning about the Chakras, yoga philosophy, and meditation rounds out the experience so you leave rested, stretched and worked out!

With Bikram and Moksha yoga picking up steam in the Durham Region I thought I would take a moment to explore the various benefits of yoga.
Hatha yoga began over five thousand years ago with ancient yogis observing nature and the human body by interpreting what they saw around them and then experimenting on themselves to see what the body told them. They copied animals in nature by assuming various positions and noticed their effects on the body. They hummed or chanted various sounds and words and after sensing how the body responded, they observed their results. They tried different breathing patterns and meditation practices and diligently noted their effects. These findings were then passed on to their students and through oral recitation were handed down through generation after generation. After many millennia of gathering knowledge and incredible experiential learning these findings were eventually written down by sages throughout the ages. Hatha yoga has been around for a very long time and all the different ‘schools’ or ‘styles’ of yoga all transcend from this ancient discipline. Flow Yoga for example is just Hatha Yoga postures done with a more ‘aerobic’ approach, Ashtanga Yoga is a series of Hatha Yoga postures repeated in a sequence, Moksha or HOT yoga is just Hatha Yoga done in a heated room. Each type of yoga offers benefits based on the millennia old science of Hatha Yoga itself.
With Hatha Yoga you increase muscle strength, aid in weight loss, increase flexibility, improve joint functioning, reduce stress, improve immune functioning, lower blood pressure and increase mental clarity and focus. In addition to the numerous physical benefits of yoga, many of which are not listed here, it can also increase feelings of well being, and can be used to deepen spiritual practice regardless of your religion. Yoga can provide you with a sense of community or it can connect you to a higher consciousness. As a practitioner of yoga, you decide what you wish to experience.
The choice to follow one particular ‘style’ or ‘school’ of yoga is a personal one and like clothing, different styles of yoga come and go in fashion, but Hatha Yoga has endured the ages!
I invite you to check out our Hatha Yoga schedule and try a class!
In Gratitude,
Marissa

After attending my first yoga class 10 years ago, I knew I had tapped into something special when I walked away from that class with profound feelings of contentment and peace. In that hour class I had effectively worked my muscles, but somehow I had also soothed my mind. I remember having had a particularly stressful day and was beginning to dread the prospects of staying up till 9:30pm to finish a yoga class. I had envisioned myself fast asleep by that time. I took that first class based on curiosity, (I had heard a great deal about yoga, but really didn't know a lot about it) and I left hooked.
Attending classes regularly for 5 years I realized I needed to deepen my experience and knowledge of yoga, its philosophies and its practices, so I looked into a teacher training course. In the beginning, I joined teacher training to purely deepen my own personal practice at home, however, as I began teaching I became overwhelmed with a sense of purpose as I reached out to others interested in experiencing yoga. I have since completed 350 hours of Hatha Yoga Teacher Training, 136 hours of Kripalu Yoga Dance training, Pre-natal Yoga training and courses in Yoga Therapy. I am an ERYT 200 registered member of Yoga Alliance, which indicates that I have met all of Yoga Alliance's criteria for training and continuing education requirements and am "registered" as a Hatha Yoga Instructor. The ERYT designation means that I have taught over 1000 teaching hours.
My experience with yoga has changed the direction of my life. I have found a passion in teaching and joy in interacting with others. All this and I can proudly proclaim I have gained ¼ inch since improving my posture with yoga – and now stand a full 5 foot 2 inches tall!
Yoga is accessible to everyone regardless of whether you are male or female, young or old, or feel you are inflexible or not strong enough. Everyone can benefit from yoga. The misconception that one has to be young, agile and able to turn oneself into a pretzel is unfortunate, as anyone who is interested in yoga, can successfully do yoga! Yoga is not about trying to look like a picture in a magazine, nor is it about trying to look like the person beside you. Recognize where you are starting from and decide on your success based on that measure. Accept your limitations and your strengths and you can make your own experience of yoga meaningful and rewarding.

The studio is over 750 square feet and is fully equipped with deluxe thick mats, bolsters, straps and blocks, not to mention additional cotton blankets for luxuriating in Savasana at the end of each class.
The studio operates out of my home, and I would like everyone to feel very comfortable coming and going. When you arrive, there are numerous places along the road in which you can park, (please be mindful of not blocking other people’s driveways). There is also ample parking at St. Bridget Catholic School just at the end of Darius Harns Dr.
Our doors open a half hour before each class so feel free to come and chat or just start to unwind early. There is a bathroom outside the studio if you need to get changed before or after class.
On the days/evenings I offer two classes back to back there is only fifteen minutes available between classes, and as such I will not have an opportunity to talk however if after class you feel you need to discuss anything with me, I encourage you to either come early for your next class or always feel comfortable phoning or emailing me with any questions or concerns – that’s why I’m here.
For those of you in the last class of the night, please feel free to stay an additional half hour if anyone needs to chat then.
When you arrive at the studio, please just come right in! You can leave your shoes at the top of the stairs and proceed directly down to the studio. The washroom will be off to your right, as well as a closet to hang your coats or other personal effects. Please feel free to bring your purses/valuables into the studio if this makes you more comfortable.
Please arrive at the studio at least 10 minutes early as the class will start promptly. Do not eat at least 2 hours before class. (If you feel you can’t wait, try to only have a light snack).
Believe in yourself. Accept who and where you are and Embody your fullest potential!
